How to Distinguish Yourself from Other Jewelers
Posted by Nersel zur Muehlen under Jewelry Business , Success StoriesNo Comments
An article I recently wrote was published in one of the highly visited jewelry business websites. Here is the link to the full article:
http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/jewelers.html
I started my jewelry business six months ago. My business partner and I are childhood friends and we both were into jewelry and unique designs for the longest time. One day one of my colleagues told me that she hated her worn out, simple, white gold wedding band. She said she did not think her wedding band reflects her love for her husband and their marriage. She was right!
Her ring did look dull and boring. I told her she would probably need something that sparkles, something unique, and handcrafted to reflect the hard work that goes into maintaining a happy marriage.
Based on this discussion we created beautiful a 18K yellow gold hand hammered antique looking wedding band for her. Two rings worn together to reflect the unity of two people. She loved it! Her husband loved it! She became our very first customer.
If you have a story like this, you should tell it to other people and talk about it on your website.
My partner and I have spent all our weekends and free time building a business from our passion. Now that our website is up and running we needed to advertise it and get the word out.
We have been selling on eBay and got great feedback from our first customers. Although eBay is a great way to start and one of the sales channels to use, it is not - and should not be - the only sales channel, because of the high listing fees involved.
We looked into advertising our site on the Internet. Just search for jewelry on Google or Yahoo you will be bombarded with hundreds of links! How can you distinguish yourself from the rest of the crowd?
Other jewelers may have nice designs too, but you need to know what your competency is. Our competency is our inspiration, our heritage, rich culture and the meaning of each of our products. Women have been wearing jewelry not just for beautification purposes but also for the purposes of protection, and celebration of love and life.
Aim to create and give timeless, high quality jewelry that women can wear at various occasions, give to a loved one or pass on to their children.
Transforming your heritage, art and culture into unique pieces of jewelry is a great experience. You can be inspired by your own life or the lives of other people.
We believe you can distinguish yourself from the rest of the crowd by telling your story, talking about your inspirations, the meaning your jewelry carries. If you have used nature, history, relationships, or anything that inspired you in designing your jewelry - describe it on your ads, your site and your catalogs.
The other way to distinguish your company is by creating a unique and memorable company logo. Your logo should reflect who you are. Our logo includes a twin goddess figure (the side-by-side double goddesses), which symbolizes the partnership behind our business, opposite seasons, and the alternating rhythm of day and night.
Hopefully these tips will help you stand out in the crowd. Communicate your experiences and your story to your clients to connect with them.

Last year it was all about diamonds. In 2006 we see a shift in emphasis from gems to metal. What best can reflect the beautiful color of gold than pure 24K gold. According to an article published in Harper’s Bazaar women this year prefer clothes and jewelry that show their individuality. When women shop for jewelry now the norm is not diamond studds or pearl earrings but jewelry that stands out. Women want jewelry that reflects their unique personalities. Plus simple diamonds and pearls do not match with this year’s fashion. Antique and colorful ethnic jewelry is one way women express themselves this year. Lots of colors, combinations of 24K gold, silver and semiprecious stones are in this year. Women in 2006 want to make statements with their colorful, large and shiny jewelry. Vintage and antique jewelry trend is very strong this year according to Harper’s Bazaar. The article emphasizes that women don’t just want the rock, they want the design and they want to create their own designs. Here are suggestions from the magazine for this year:
- Try new shades or colors in jewelry
- Go for the big and the bold
- Individualize your style with antique jewelry
- Try semiprecious stones such as tourmalines and turquoise
- Mix and match jewelry;you can wear white gold with yellow gold, 24K gold with colored gems
